Cosmetic Dentistry

What is "the smile of your dreams"? For some it's a Hollywood-style perfection, the cover of Vogue or Vanity Fair. For others it's simply the confidence that comes from having brighter, whiter, straighter teeth

Whatever your ideal smile, we are available to help you-often in just two to three visits! In many cases, we can straighten and realign crooked teeth – almost instantly. Your cosmetic options include bonding, veneers, whitening, crowns (caps), dentures and implant supported teeth. You may be bothered by a black filling that shows when you smile wide. Undetectable tooth color blended fillings can eliminate these worries. It can all blend with your own smile. I will briefly explain the different treatments available for you.

Whitening

Zoom bleaching

One is the “Zoom bleaching” (the system used in the makeover shows on TV) which is done entirely in the studio and takes an hour and a half. You can watch your Netflix on the TV in the ceiling when this is going on. You leave with an instantly brighter, whiter smile. For at least 48 hours coffee and colorful food such as berries, soy sauce, red wine etc should be avoided.

home bleaching

We also include the home bleaching kit with the Zoom whitening. The other is by “the home bleaching” alone. We start by taking impressions of your teeth and send them to a lab who will make you custom fit bleaching trays, thin plastic trays surrounding your teeth with a perfect fit. You then put a bleaching gel in the trays and place them over your teeth and sleep with them for about 1 to 2 weeks. Bleaching is such a great treatment and often you find that this alone will make you a lot happier with your smile.

Bonding

Bonding is one of Dr Andersson’s personal favourites. He can very easily Close gaps, change the shape of teeth and repair chipped teeth with this NON INVASIVE technique. No injection is necessary for this treatment. It is totally painless, done instantly, and often a lot quicker and cheaper than other treatment options. Bonding is a way of adding material on to the tooth and then shaping and polishing it to the required shape. The composite material used is totally matched to your tooth and after final polishing you would never know it was not there naturally to start with. Veneers

Veneers are a thin layer of porcelain bonded on to your tooth to get required shape, colour and surface.

FIRST APPOINTMENT

At your first visit, the teeth are prepared and an impression is taken. Normally, only about 1millimetre of enamel is reduced from the front and the edges of the teeth. An impression is taken and sent to the lab where each porcelain veneer is custom made to our specifications. Do not use bleaching products for two weeks prior to this appointment or shade selection will be hindered.

BETWEEN VISITS

Normally it will take 7 - 14 days for the lab to make the veneers. Oral hygiene is a must during this period. Healthy gums are required to place your new veneers! Brush at least 3 times a day and be sure to gently massage the gums with the brush.

SECOND APPOINTMENT

The Veneers will be bonded in place by a resin bonding technique. Any sensitivity you have for 24 hours after the appointment is normal and will dissipate.

ONE WEEK FOLLOW-UP

At this we will fine tune the veneers both functionally and cosmetically, if needed. Be patient, it will take your gums, lips, tongue, bite, cheeks and speech time to accommodate to your "new" teeth.

Invisalign - The clear alternative to braces

Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that are custom-molded to fit you. The virtually invisible aligners gradually reposition your teeth into a smile you'll be proud of.

Remove your aligners to eat, brush and floss. You change the aligners every week and your teeth move little by little, producing wonderful results in often as little as 6 months to a year. The convenience and ease of use of the Invisalign system have made it our number one choice of straightening of the teeth. Invisalign won’t disrupt your lifestyle as there are no metal wires or bands to irritate your mouth, and best of all, most people won't even notice you're in treatment. Invisalign®, the clear alternative to braces, has been chosen by over 4 million people who want beautiful smiles.

This technology allows the dental team to have an immediate and detailed view of the area examined. This extraordinary new technology surpasses the diagnostic abilities of traditional film and it does so with substantially less radiation exposure to both the patient and the dental professionals while providing unmatched image quality.
Crowns

A Crown is pretty much the same as the Veneer above but surrounds the whole tooth. The crown (cap) is a way of making your tooth smooth and healthy. It replaces some or all of the outer part of the tooth. Caps fit over and are bonded or cemented (glued) onto your tooth. It is a long-term answer for any of your teeth which are badly decayed, heavily filled, or unsightly. Crowns are usually made of ceramic or Zirconia.

Your "Preparation Appointment"

At this visit we remove the damaged and decayed parts of the tooth, and ALL old fillings. Once the tooth is cleaned out we will know if a core build up or a post is needed. If needed it will serve to hold the crown to the tooth. An impression will be taken once the preparation is done. The tooth will then be covered by a temporary crown. It will protect the tooth while the lab is handcrafting your beautiful new crown.

Sometimes, it can be sensitive to hot and cold things, and your gum may be a little sore. You may need to take a mild pain killer like Ibuprofen or Paracetamol. Keep your tooth very clean You can eat on teeth which have been prepared for caps - it does them no harm. Do avoid sticky or chewy foods though because this can pull the temporary crown off since it is only cemented with a temporary cement The temporary teeth are very beautifully made and will not be unsightly while you are waiting for your permanent crown.

Your "Fitting Appointment"

The crown will be cemented to the tooth and the bite will be adjusted so your bite feels absolutely normal when you leave.

Implants

If you have any missing teeth, even one, or have lost all your teeth then you should consider the exciting possibility of dental implants. It may seem like an impossible dream but advances in dentistry mean that teeth can now be replaced thanks to dental implants.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

A single visit is usually all that is required for implant insertion. Once in place they are covered by gum tissue and allowed between four to six months to become firmly attached to the jaw bone. During this time existing dentures of a temporary bridge/crown can be worn comfortably. Once the implants have taken, the replacement teeth can be made and fitted.

WHEN CAN IMPLANTS BE FITTED?

Implants can be fitted in one of two ways:
Immediate Implant placement – the dental implant is placed at the same time that the tooth or teeth are removed. The advantages of this approached are a reduction in treatment time and bone preservation. Weather or not this is possible will depend on the condition of your bone at the time of tooth removal. If infection is present it may be necessary to defer implant placement for three months while new healthy bone reforms in the area. Delayed implant placement - the dental implant is inserted into a region of the mouth where the tooth or teeth have previously been removed or have been missing for some time. Implant treatment may entail a combination of the above insertion methods and the time required to place them will depend on the number being inserted and their position in the mouth. Every effort will be made to keep the treatment time to a minimum whilst not jeopardising the final result.

IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL?

The first and most frequently asked question. It is surprising how little pain is felt after the procedure. Often only minor discomfort similar to that of a simple dental extraction is experienced.

ARE IMPLANTS SAFE?

Osteo-ti is a British manufactured implant system which is CE marked, an internationally recognised sign showing that the medical device provides patients with a high level of protection, high success level and does not compromise your health and safety.

ARE DENTURE YOUR ONLY CHOICE?

A life long sentence to dentures was once the only sad solution to the debilitating condition of missing teeth. But if you long to return to the good times before the frustration of dentures when you still had all your own teeth then implants could be the answer. Dental implants eliminate the discomfort and embarrassment associated with loose fitting false teeth. Patients who have benefited from dental implants have said that their self confidence and quality of life improved.

HOW MANY IMPLANTS WILL BE REQUIRED?

It is not a simple case of replacing each missing tooth with an individual implant. The number of implants necessary has to be calculated according to individual requirements.

WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?

As the name suggest it is implanted into the jaw acting like a root, and the replacement teeth are later fastened to it. Dental implants feel and function just like natural teeth on biting. The Osteo-ti Ezeeplant dental implant is a small tapered screw designed to copy the shape of a natural tooth root. This shape makes it easier to insert as it almost matches the size and shape of the original tooth root it is replacing. It is made from Titanium Alloy, a biologically safe material which the body accepts as its own, so there need be no fear of rejection due to an allergic reaction.

HOW CAN IMPLANTS BE USED?

Implants can be used just like real teeth in a variety of ways to provide different treatment options to suit your requirements. From one to complete arch full of teeth is possible. Even dentures can be made feel more comfortable and secure. A full arch of teeth fixed in the mouth makes you feel more confident and smiling comes easily once again.

CAN ANYONE HAVE IMPLANTS?

Yes believe it of not, anyone regardless of age or who is unhappy with the condition of their mouth and wants to eat without discomfort, free from the worries of denture stability when laughing and talking can benefit. If you are healthy enough for a simple extraction and have enough remaining bone then there is a good chance you may be able to have implants.

WHEN SHOULD IMPLANTS BE PLACED

Age is not an excluding factor, however, it is not advisable to delay placement of implants as the jaw bone starts to shrink away once the teeth have been lost. This loss of jaw bone reduces facial support resulting in premature ageing. It has been shown that replacing missing teeth with dental implants almost eliminates bone loss.

HOW LONG WILL IMPLANTS LAST?

Fortunately implants do not suffer from tooth decay. However, it is essential for long-term success that home care is maintained together with routine visits to the hygienist to carry out cleaning just like real teeth.

ARE IMPLANTS EXPENSIVE?

As individual requirements will be different, the cost will vary depending on the complexity and the number of implants required. An individual assessment of fees will be determined and a written estimate provided before treatment begins. Surprisingly the total cost of implant treatment is often comparable to the expense of conventional bridge work.

Facial Aesthetics

With age our face changes. Not just less elasticity of the skin but also shrinkage of the bones in the face and widening of the eye orbit together with loss of fat pads that naturally help us have the structure of the face and our youthful look.

To counteract these changes and help you look and feel your best, we offer treatments such as anti wrinkle correction (botulinumtoxin A) and Dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid), and various Peels and Facial creams.

BOTOX/Anti-wrinkle treatment

Botulinum toxin is a bacterium that blocks release of acetylcholine, the substance responsible for transmitting electrical impulses that elicit muscle contraction. In medicine, Botulinum toxin is injected directly into hyperactive muscles. It has been safe and effectively used for treatment of strabismus (cross-eye) and blempharospasm(lidspasm) since early eighties.

How does Botulinum toxin work?

Hyperactivity of the facial expression muscles often results the development of deep frown lines, forehead lines and/or crown’s feet. Injecting botulinum toxin into the affected area temporarily paralyses the underlying muscles responsible for wrinkling, giving the face a more relaxed and pleasant appearance. The wrinkles become smoother or disappear altogether.

When and how long does botulinum toxin work?

The initial effect of treatment becomes visible within 48 to 72 hours. The maximum effect is reached in about 1 to 2 weeks. Your facial expression will become more relaxed but by no means mask-like. The overall result is very natural. The effect of treatment generally last 3 to 6 months. Re-treatment is then required.

Potential adverse effects (side effects)

Botulinum toxin injection is generally a safe and effective treatment method. Nevertheless, certain side effects can occur but, like the intended treatment effects, they are mostly reversible. At the appointment, you will be informed about the potential side effects of botulinum toxin therapy, contraindication to therapy, and potential drug interactions.

Potential Side effects

Bruising and swelling at the injection site Slight feeling of nausea Tiredness, pain in the arms and legs Temporarily drooping of the eyebrow or upper eye lid Brief visual disturbances Dryness of the eyes Skin rash Itching Allergic reactions Dry mouth Muscle atrophy

Contraindications

Pregnancy Breast feeding Myasthenia Gravis Lambert- Eaton syndrome Blood coagulation disorders

Drug interactions

Drug interactions can occur when botulinum toxin is used concomitantly with other medication. Since these medications can alter the effects of botulinum toxin, you must ensure that your doctor is aware of any current medications you are taking, especially Aminoglycoside antibiotics such as amakin, gentamicin, neomycin, netilmicin, streptomycin and tobramycin, Anesthetic, Muscle relaxants

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers, also known as injectable implants, soft tissue fillers, or wrinkle fillers. Dermal fillers are being used more and more to help reverse the changes associated with ageing. Because the goal is to return the dermis to its original youthful state, dermal fillers can give a more natural appearance than surgical face lifts. Dermal fillers are being used to create a smoother and/or fuller appearance in the face, including reducing or eliminating wrinkles, raising scar depressions, and replacing soft-tissue volume loss such as the nasiolabial folds, lips, and cheeks.

The Dermal fillers we use are made from Hyaluronic acid, (or HA for short) non-animal based. It is a sugary molecule and is a substance that is naturally present in the human body. The Brand of fillers that are currently our favourites are Juvederm, Teosyal and Bolotero

Risks

As in any medical procedure, there are risks involved with the use of dermal fillers. That is why it is important for you to understand their limits and possible risks. Any dermal filler can cause short- or long-term side effects, permanent side effects, or a combination. However, most side effects associated with dermal fillers occur shortly after injection and most go away in less than two weeks. In some cases, side effects may appear weeks, months or years after injection.

Common side effects include:

  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Itching, rash
  • Difficulty in performing activities (only observed when injected into the back of the hand)

Less common side effects include:

  • Raised bumps in or under the skin (nodules or granulomas) that may need to be surgically removed
  • Infection
  • Open or draining wounds
  • A sore at the injection site
  • Allergic reaction
  • Necrosis (tissue death)

The following rare side effects have also been reported to the FDA:

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock) that requires immediate emergency medical assistance
  • Migration/ movement of filler material from the site of injection
  • Leakage or rupture of the filler material at the injection site or through the skin (which may result from tissue reaction or infection)
  • The formation of permanent hard nodules in the face or hand
  • Vision abnormalities, including blindness
  • Stroke
  • Injury to the blood supply
  • Damage to the skin or the lips

If you choose to have permanent fillers removed or reduced through surgery, you may experience the same adverse events typically associated with surgery. You should be aware that it may be difficult to remove the filler material.
